Who is Esther Kia'aina?
Esther Kia'aina is an American politician who currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources, and is formerly a candidate for United States Congress to represent Hawaii's 2nd congressional district, following the retirement of Congresswoman Mazie Hirono, who decided to run for U.S. Senate in 2012.
Kia'aina lost in the Democratic Party primary for the 2nd congressional district to Tulsi Gabbard, garnering 10% of the vote. Following her loss, the Governor of Hawaii, Neil Abercrombie, appointed her to the state's Department of Land and Natural Resources on October 15, 2012, an office that was left vacant following the resignation of Guy Kaulukukui.
On December 26, 2012, it was announced that Kia'aina was among three candidates submitted by the Democratic Party of Hawaii to replace the late Senator Daniel Inouye, following his death earlier that month.
