Who was August von Fligely?

August von Fligely was an Austrian Field Marshal Second Lieutenant, comparable to Lieutenant-General in the United States Army, and a geographer. A pioneer in meridian arc measurement theory, he provided for the creation of quality maps in the third land survey of Austria-Hungary. The northernmost point in Europe, Cape Fligely, was named after August von Fligely. He was director of the military geographical institute in Vienna from 1854 to 1872.
