Who is Gary Bennett?

Gary Ernest Bennett is a former English professional footballer who is most known for playing for Sunderland from 1985 to 1996. He originally started his career with Manchester City, but moved on to Cardiff City in 1981, without making any first team appearances, on a free transfer where he linked up with his brother Dave.

He left Cardiff for £65,000 in July 1984 to join Sunderland. Bennett went on to play 369 league games with Sunderland scoring 23 goals before joining Carlisle United 11 years later. He later played in the Football League for Scarborough and Darlington. Whilst at Sunderland, he played in the 1992 FA Cup Final where they lost to Liverpool.

He now works as a radio pundit and has regularly commentates on Sunderland games. He also does some work for 'Show Racism The Red Card'. His son has recently joined the academy of Middlesbrough, a local rival to his former team, Sunderland. He also coaches University of Sunderland Women's FC in his spare time.
