Who was Gustave Humbert?
A former Mayor of Toulouse and later Justice Minister, Gustave´s son married fraudster Madame Humbert. Gustave as a law student had married his maid, Marie Emilie Thenière. This lady was sister of Madame Humbert's mother. Using Thérèse's imaginary bonds, Gustave was able to mortgage his property and a fabricated cork oak plantation in Portugal.
