Who was John Coburn?

John Coburn was an Australian abstract painter. He was also known for his tapestries.--

Born in Ingham, Queensland, Coburn served in the Australian Navy during World War 2 and later enrolled at the National Art School.

He won the Blake Prize for Religious Art twice, in 1960 and again in 1977.

All the major galleries in Australia have collected and displayed his works as well as many major private and corporate collections, such as the Cbus Collection of Australian Art. Two of his tapestries hang in the Sydney Opera House and seven hang in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington D.C. His works are also displayed in the Vatican Museum, Rome.
