Who is Steve Nikitaras?
Steven "Steve" Nikitaras is a former professional cricketer who played at Australian domestic level for both New South Wales and Western Australia. Born in Port Kembla, New South Wales, Nikitaras did not begin playing cricket until the age of 19, but soon progressed to playing Sydney grade cricket. He debuted for New South Wales during the 1996–97 season, but was unable to gain regular selection, and moved to Western Australia for the 1998–99 season. A left-arm pace bowler, Nikitaras was a consistent selection for Western Australia in the following season of the limited-overs Mercantile Mutual Cup, but was rarely selected at Sheffield Shield level. In the 2000–01 season, he played only three matches at state level, and was not awarded a contract for the following season. Qualifying for English side Middlesex under the Bosman ruling, the injury-prone Nikitaras played twice at second XI level, but did not play senior matches. A Greek citizen by descent, in later years he went on to qualify for the Greek national cricket team, and captained the team in the 2011 ICC European T20 Championship Division Two.
