Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, SSPX is a bishop of the Society of St. Pius X.
He was said to have incurred an automatic excommunication latae sententiae by the Roman Catholic Church because of his unauthorized consecration by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre on 30 June 1988, deemed by the Holy See to be "unlawful" and "a schismatic act", though some individuals doubt the validity of the excommunication. Pope Benedict XVI remitted the controversial excommunication on 21 January 2009.
