Who was Bohumil Modrý?
Bohumil Modrý was a goalie for the Czechoslovakia men's national ice hockey team which won the 1949 World Championship. On March 11, 1950, Modrý and his teammates were arrested at the Prague airport while preparing to travel to London to defend their title at the 1950 World Championship tournament, and charged with making plans to defect to the West. Modrý and eleven other players were convicted of treason in October, with Modrý receiving the longest sentence, 15 years in prison. Modrý was born in Prague and died shortly after his early release from incarceration. He was a silver medalist at the 1948 Winter Olympics.
