Who is Gary Mormino?
Gary R. Mormino is a historian, author, columnist at the Tampa Tribune and Frank E. Duckwall Professor of History and co-director of the Florida Studies Program at University of South Florida St. Petersburg. His books include Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida, published in 2005 by the University Press of Florida; Immigrants on the Hill, winner of the Howard Marraro Prize as the outstanding book in Italian history; The Immigrant World of Ybor City, honored with the Theodore Saloutos Prize for the outstanding book in ethnic-immigration history. He wrote for the St. Petersburg Times, Orlando Sentinel, and Miami Herald.
Mormino graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has taught at USF since 1977. In 2003 the Florida Humanities Council named him its first Humanist of the Year.
