Who is George Ryley Scott?
George Ryley Scott was a prolific British author of books about sex, active from the late 1920s to the 1970s. He also wrote on the subjects of poultry, health, corporal punishment, and writing itself. His History of Prostitution from Antiquity to the Present Day, which has been much reprinted, was the first work of its kind to promote a tolerationist, rather than abolitionist perspective.
Scott styled himself "F.Z.S., F.R.A.I., F.Ph.S.", which means that he was a Fellow of the Zoological Society, of the Royal Anthropological Institute, and of the Public Health Service of England, but also by implication that he was not the recipient of an advanced degree.
