Who was George Gerard?
The Rt Rev George Vincent Gerard, MC, CBE was the 7th Anglican Bishop of Waiapu, serving from 1938 to 1944.
He was educated at Christ's College, Canterbury and Brasenose College, Oxford. After wartime service with the Buffs he was ordained in 1923 and embarked on his ecclesiastical career with a curacy in Timaru. Later he was Vicar of Pahiatua then Petone and finally of St Matthew, Auckland. During World War II he was a Prisoner of war at Vincigliata in Italy. After resigning his See he was Rural Dean of Rotherham and an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Sheffield until his retirement in 1960.
