Who was Gerry Niewood?
Gerry Niewood was an American jazz saxophonist who worked closely with Chuck Mangione. Like Mangione, Niewood was born in Rochester, New York, and graduated from the Eastman School of Music located there.
He had been scheduled to play with Mangione and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on February 13, 2009, but was killed the night before in the crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 together with fellow band member Coleman Mellett. He was 65.
He also played with Simon and Garfunkel in their 1981 Concert in Central Park.
