After moving with the father's career to homes in Denville, New Jersey and Watertown, Connecticut, Widmayer suffered a three year bout with Legg-Perthes disease, affecting his right hip that incapacitated him from the age of four until the age of seven years. The family settled in Acton, Massachusetts by 1965 where Widmayer attended school from the first grade. His major studies were in Business Marketing and French. He studied abroad in 1977-78 at the Université Catholique de l'Ouest in Angers, France.
