Who was J. Bernlef?

Hendrik Jan Marsman, better known by his pen name J. Bernlef, was a Dutch writer, lyricist, novelist and translator. He won numerous awards for his work, including the Constantijn Huygens Prize in 1984 and the P. C. Hooft Award in 1994. His book Hersenschimmen features on NRC's list of Best Dutch novels. Upon his death, he was hailed as "one of the greats of Dutch literature."
