Who is Jayant Patil?

Jayant Patil is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He is the current Cabinet Minister of Rural Development in the state of Maharashtra in Western India.

Patil has a B.E. in Civil Engineering from VJTI, Mumbai. He is the son of Rajarambapu Patil, a politician from Maharashtra, and plunged in to public life after his father died untimely in 1984.

In 1999, he had an opportunity to take over as Minister, Finance and Planning, Maharashtra making him the youngest ever finance minister of the state. He continued as the finance minister of the state for 9 years and presented the annual state budget a record 9 times. He was made home minister after the previous home minister resigned.

As a Home minister, Jayant Patil was responsible for initiating Force One, Maharashtra's anti-terrorism Quick Response Team. He took over the reins of the Rural Development Department in 2009.

He has won the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections 5 times from the Islampur constituency in Sangli.

He is married to Shailaja Patil and is the father to two sons Prateek and Rajvardhan.
