Who was José María Vargas Vila?
José María Vargas Vila. June 23, 1860 – May 23, 1933. Colombian writer.
He was one of the most controversial writers in the beginning of 20th century in the American continent, Jose Maria Vargas Vila characterized by its radical liberal ideals and the consequent critic against the clergy, the conservative ideas and the imperialistic policy of the United States. He was excommunicated by the Catholic Church in 1900 on the publication of his novel Ibis, and received the news with joy.
