Who is Kim Ki-hoon?
Kim Ki-hoon is the first gold medalist in Winter Olympics for Korea. He is a three-time Olympic Champion and 1992 Overall World Champion.
Kim became well known when he participated in short-track demonstration event in 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, winning a gold medal in 1500m.
He is so far the only person to have swept all the gold medals available in short-track speed skating in a winter olympic games. He did this 1992 Winter Olympics, winning 1000m final in world record time of 1 minute 30.76 seconds, and was a part of team that won 5000m relay in world record time of 7 minute 14.02 seconds. He went on to win the World Championship of the year.
Kim became the first short-tracker to defend his olympic title, winning 1000m in 1994 Winter Olympics with the time of 1 minute 34.57 seconds. He suffered setback in defending 5000m title, when his skate blade broke when he fell during a qualifying race.
In 2002, Kim Ki-hoon was appointed the coach of Korean national short-track team. He scouted and coached triple gold medalist Ahn Hyun-Soo. He participated in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver as the coach of the South Korean national team.
Kim is currently serving as a full professor at Ulsan College.
