Who was Manie Maritz?
Manie Maritz was a Boer General during the Second Boer War and a leading rebel of the 1914 Maritz Rebellion.
Maritz was born in Kimberley, Northern Cape and christened Salmon Gerhardus Maritz and also known as Gerrit Maritz.
After the Second Boer War Maritz served in the South African Army, but at the start of World War I he rebelled against the South African government, allied himself to the Germans and was a leading member of the Boer Revolt in 1914.
He died in Pretoria on 19 December 1940 and is buried in the Pretoria West Cemetery.
