Who is Mari Carmen Aponte?
Mari Carmen Aponte is a Washington DC-based Puerto Rico-born attorney who is the United States ambassador to El Salvador. She first served as ambassador to El Salvador from August 2010 until December 2011 in a recess appointment that expired at the end of 2011. After her recess appointment expired, she returned to the U.S. for about six months. Then, on June 14, 2012, the United States Senate confirmed Aponte to be ambassador to El Salvador, allowing her to return to the country as ambassador.
