Who was Michael Malpass?

Michael Malpass was a sculptor and artist best known for his spheres, which he made from found industrial objects using bandsaw and blacksmithing techniques. In talking about the sphere, Malpass stated, "The sphere is the most perfect form. It is efficient, for example, with the most volume for the least surface area. The sphere is both amorphic and geometric and the center is always equidistant from the surface. The sphere is whole. The form is simple, yet the surface is complicated. The sculpture is animated, yet peaceful."

Later in his career, he also worked on a series of sculptures which he affectionately called "Chickenmen"; In describing his sculpture, Malpass said, "From the discards of society, I simply try to create a beautiful object. My focus and direction are so strong it is as if my sculpture dictates the next step. While working on one sculpture, I will think of ten more possibilities, reject seven, and choose the next of the three remaining ideas. I am definitely near the rubicon, making shapes no one has seen before, from metal used for thousands of years."

Malpass' artwork can be found around the world in museum, private and corporate collections.
