Who was Ramón Fonst?

Ramón Fonst Segundo was a Cuban fencer who competed in the early 20th century. He was born and died in Havana.

Fonst participated in fencing at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris for Cuba and won the gold medal in the épée, defeating French fencer Louis Perrée in the final. He also won the silver medal in the Amateurs-masters épée competition.

His victories at the 1900 Olympics made him the first olympic medal winner ever from Latin America.

After his career as an active sportsmen Fonst became president of the national olympic committee for Cuba.
