Who is Betty T. Yee?
Betty T. Yee (余淑婷)is a member of the California Board of Equalization. She is a candidate for State Controller.
A native of San Francisco's Parkside district, Yee's parents hailed from the Canton region of China from which they emigrated in 1956. She worked in her family's neighborhood business while she grew up.
Originally speaking no English, she spent her grade school years in the San Francisco Unified School District before attending the University of California, Berkeley as an undergraduate, attaining a bachelor's degree in sociology. She went on to attend Golden Gate University from which she earned a Masters degree in Public Administration.
Yee was Governor Gray Davis' Chief Deputy director for budget before becoming the Chief Deputy of Board of Equalization member Carole Migden. She was appointed to fill the seat when Migden vacated it.
Yee was elected in her own right to the California Board of Equalization in 2006 from the 1st Board District and was re-elected in 2010.
Yee currently serves on the State Board of Directors as Secretary for California Women Lead, a women's nonprofit, nonpartisan organization.
