Who was Jules J. Baudry?
Als einfacher Angestellter im Buchhandel beginnend, assoziierte er sich 1840 mit dem Verlag Gide und betreute hier ein umfangreiches Programm von Luxuspublikationen (u. a. über Rembrandt, Reisebeschreibungen aus Alt-Frankreich in 17 Bänden, Jules Gailhabauds Architekturwerk), denen staatliche Unterstützung geliehen wurde. 1857 trennte er sich von Gide und trat nach mehrjähriger Pause mit Noblet in Liege in Verbindung, dessen Filiale in Paris er zunächst leitete. Auf dieser Grundlage baute er die neue Librairie Polytechnique als Privatunternehmen auf, welche den Werken der Ingenieurkunst und Architektur zur Verfügung stand und von ihm zu voller Blüte geführt wurde.
