Who was Izzy Goldstein?
Isidore "Izzy" Goldstein was a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. Born in Odessa, Russian Empire, Goldstein played only one season in the major leagues, appearing in 16 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1932. Goldstein posted mediocre numbers, having a 3-2 record and an ERA of 4.47 - slightly lower than the league average. Goldstein also proved to be a strong hitter for a pitcher, as he had 5 hits and 3 RBIs in 17 at bats for a .294 batting average and .353 slugging percentage. An article in the "Jewish Daily" in 2004 said the following about Goldstein: "For young Jews, however, baseball is more than statistics. Playing ball has been a conduit for blending into the American mainstream. A one-sentence summation of the life of Izzy Goldstein reflects the American-Jewish experience: He was born in 1908 in Odessa, pitched in 16 games for the 1932 Detroit Tigers and died in 1993 in Delray Beach, Fla." Izzy Goldstein was 85 years old at the time of his death.
Goldstein was one of at least six players in major league history to go by the name "Izzy." The others are Izzy Alcantara, Izzy Hoffman, Izzy Isringhausen, Izzy Leon, and Izzy Molina.
