Who was John Hartley?

Colonel John Cabourn Hartley was a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Oxford University Cricket Club between 1895 and 1897 and Sussex County Cricket Club between 1895 and 1898. He then went on to play for the Marylebone Cricket Club in first-class fixtures until 1926. Hartley also played Test cricket for England on their tour to South Africa in 1905-06.

In the Army, Hartley served in both the Second Boer War and the First World War, being mentioned in dispatches during both conflicts.
