Who is Paul Schotsmans?

Paul Schotsmans is a Professor at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law, Catholic University Leuven, Belgium. He has a licentiate Degree in Educational Sciences and a Doctoral Degree in Theology. In 1984 he received the position of professor of medical ethics in the Faculty of Medicine, K.U.Leuven. In 1995 he became Ordinarius Professor of the K.U.Leuven.

Paul Schotsmans was appointed Director of the new Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law in 1986. From 1996-2005 he presided over the Department of Public Health. Currently, he is vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

He is honorary president of the European Association of Centres of Medical Ethics where he served consecutively as treasurer, secretary-general and president. He is also board member of the Belgian Advisory Committee on Bioethics, board member of the International Association of Bioethics, president of the ethics committee of Eurotransplant as well as member of several local and international ethics committees.
